Proctoring

Ensuring that your course meets ASU’s academic and accreditation requirements for credit-bearing college courses.

What is proctoring?

Proctoring is the supervision of an exam or assignment to ensure integrity and prevent cheating. In Universal Learner Courses proctoring is delivered by additional software inside of the course experience that monitors your webcam and screen during specific assignments like quizzes and exams.

Why do some courses have proctored exams or quizzes?

To ensure fairness and academic integrity.

Proctored exams confirm that all learners complete their own work under the same conditions, helping maintain fairness and uphold ASU’s academic standards. This protects the credibility of the credit you earn and ensures every learner’s grade reflects their own effort and understanding.

To meet university and accreditation standards.

Some subjects (especially in math, sciences, and business) require verified assessment of learning outcomes. Proctoring ensures that the course meets ASU’s academic and accreditation requirements for credit-bearing college courses.

To support transferability and credit recognition.

Verified assessments help ensure that the credit you earn is recognized by ASU and, in many cases, by other institutions — because it meets the same standards as a regular ASU course.

How does proctoring work?

As you complete your exam or assignment with Honorlock, your computer’s screen and webcam will be monitored and recorded by a live Honorlock proctor. If you are flagged by the system or a proctor, the live virtual proctor will pop in to assess the situation, make sure there isn’t an academic violation, and help you get back on track with your exam. Honorlock also leverages an integrity algorithm that can detect search-engine use, so it’s important to not search for answers outside of the exam environment, even if it’s on a secondary device, like your cell phone or tablet.

Honorlock testing policies are determined by the instructor and communicated in the syllabus. If the instructor does not set any specific policies, then the following are standard. Adhering to the following will ensure that you do not violate the online exam rules.

Behavior:

  • Do not leave the exam environment at any time during the exam, unless specifically allowed in the exam instructions by your instructor
  • Dress as if you were in a classroom setting
  • Hats, hoods, headphones, earbuds, or earplugs are NOT allowed during the exam taking process
  • Do not talk or communicate by any other means during the exam

Environment:

  • The environment must be quiet and fully lit
  • You must be seated at a clean desk or table
  • The exam must be taken in the same room that is scanned during the room scan
  • The desk or table must be cleared of all materials not required for the exam unless specifically allowed in exam instructions
  • Internet-capable devices such as a cell phone, e-reader, smartwatch, or internet-cable calculator must not be visible on the desk, table or testing area
  • The camera must be focused on the test taker at all times
  • No one other than the test-taker is permitted to enter the testing area during the exam

Upon completion of the exam, once you click Submit Quiz, Honorlock will close and you will no longer be recorded or monitored.

Honorlock proctoring events are reviewed by the course team, and violations of proctoring policy may impact your score or eligibility to get credit in the course. If your instructional team has questions about footage of your proctoring event, they may contact you for more information.

No. There is no exclusion from proctoring requirements and if you do not want to download Honorlock software or participate in proctoring, you should refer to the ULC catalog for other courses that do not require proctoring.
