OGL 220 - Behavioral Dynamics in Organizations

Overview

Explores the different theories, strategies and skills in the fields of organizational behavior and interpersonal relationships. Covers critical skills and perspectives associated with cross-cultural relationships, personality and values-driven behaviors, empathy, perspective-taking, learning and motivation, conflict resolution, stress management, effective communication, group dynamics, and diagnosis of performance-related issues in organizations.

Course prerequisites and requirements

To be successful in this course, we recommend English language fluency and computer literacy. We also encourage you to make sure your laptop or desktop computer meets the technical requirements.

  • Explore and reflect on behaviors associated with emotional intelligence and empathy
  • Describe behavioral ramifications associated with mental models
  • Discuss key concepts associated with knowledge acquisition and learning
  • Contrast needs-based and process-based models of motivation
  • Compare and contrast different types of communication and communication channels and practice “flexing” communication style behaviors
  • Assess individual strengths and weaknesses with respect to listening skills, assessing verbal and nonverbal cues and cross-cultural implications
  • Describe group dynamics and stages of team design and development
  • Develop effective conflict management strategies
  • Discuss negotiation and decision-making processes, including common biases, mistakes, and how to avoid them
  • Assess leadership styles, and strengths and weaknesses associated with various styles
  • Discuss the positive and negative aspects of power and influence
  • Assess characteristics of organizational culture and discuss approaches to changing the culture of an organization
  • Diagnose the root cause(s) of performance problems at work, and develop performance-related interventions
